PD Dr. Ugo Dessi, M.A.

Ugo Dessì is adjunct professor (Privatdozent) at the Institute for the Study of Religion, Leipzig University (Germany), senior research fellow at the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies (HCAS) "Multiple Secularities: Beyond the West, Beyond Modernity" at the same university, and honorary research associate at the Department of Religious Studies, University of Cape Town (South Africa). He holds an M.A. in Philosophy (University of Cagliari, Italy) and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies (Marburg University, Germany). Dr. Dessì earned his Habilitation in Religious Studies from Leipzig University in 2012. He has conducted research and taught at several universities in Japan, Germany, the United States, South Africa, and the Czech Republic. He has published widely on Japanese religions, including Ethics and Society in Contemporary Shin Buddhism (LIT 2007), The Social Dimension of Shin Buddhism (Brill 2010), Japanese Religions and Globalization (Routledge 2013), and The Global Repositioning of Japanese Religions: An Integrated Approach (Routledge 2017). While at the Department, he continues his current research on the factors underlying religious adaptations to the global context in Japan and other cultural areas.
